There's a story of real musical rediscovery behind Sketchy, the fifth album from Tune Yards. Having wound up finishing the last decade on I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life, the band apparently also realised that many of the things they found problematic in terms of the way UK music is frequently conceived, made, and marketed had managed to creep into their own practices and ideas. A rethink was on the cards.
Skip forward three years and the result is Sketchy, an album that celebrates the power and inventiveness only possible with live instrumentation, with word on the proverbial street suggesting at least some of the work here can be traced back to mammoth jam sessions. And it definitely shows. Of course the tracks are typically tight and executed with a razor sharp precision most electronic-pop-soul outfits can only dream of, but there's a distinctly more live feel here than recent outings, making for an emotionally danceable beast.
