Originally recorded in 1999 and early 2000, “Thick as Pop”, the second studio album from Scotland’s powerpop quintet The Swiss Family Orbison, has never before had an actual physical release. Blighted by a series of personal tragedies, the band just kind of “fell away” into different lives and projects as the final mixes were being completed. A very limited number of homemade mock-ups of the album escaped to do the rounds locally for a bit and it was also once bootlegged and posted out to various countries in a blank sleeve, claiming to be the world’s first ever “chain album”. But other than that, these tracks could only be found in extremely low-bit quality, lurking in the bleak, damp corners of now defunct internet streaming sites of that time.

For its 25th anniversary year (or 26th - depending on when you’re counting from), “Thick as Pop” has been remastered for both vinyl and CD formats at ESKO STUDIOS in Finland by their long-time friend and collaborator, Robin Sutherland. Now restored to its original running order (vividly reflecting the sheer joy, madness, loss and pain of their time spent making it) it is finally being physically released, as originally intended, on orange vinyl with a gatefold sleeve featuring the photographs of Christine Miller.

There is also a bonus track, “Going Out” which was recorded and mixed during the same sessions and intended to be a stand-alone single at the time, which can be accessed via the digital download code that comes with the vinyl LP, and also as an unlisted bonus track on the CD.

Strap yourself in… “Thick as Pop” is quite a ride.
