Skyclad’s 1991 debut album affirmed them as one of the key pioneers of folk metal upon its release, and although it’s closer to the thrash roots of vocalists Martin Walkyier’s previous outfit Sabbat in its approach, it was the experimentation with violins and keyboards on songs like the standout track The Widdershins Jig which would define the band’s later offerings. This record clearly demonstrates the band’s capabilities in creating something unique in heavy metal history and is considered a benchmark in folk metal circles.
