Nafas is the debut original album by Salwa Jaradat, a Palestinian vocalist, researcher, and composer whose work sits at the intersection of classical Arabic music, oral tradition, and feminist inquiry. Rather than reshaping tradition for contemporary effect, Jaradat approaches it as a living practice — one that carries memory, emotion, and collective experience into the present tense.

Grounded in her studies at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine and later in musicology in Lebanon, Jaradat’s artistic practice treats sound as a site of continuity and resistance. Her parallel work as a performer, researcher, and archivist informs an approach that is both rigorous and deeply personal, attentive to voices and histories that have long existed at the margins.

Developed during an intensive residency in Lebanon, Nafas brings together a small ensemble of regional musicians, with Jaradat’s voice at its centre: measured, expansive, and deliberate. Across six compositions, the album unfolds patiently, moving between stillness and momentum, intimacy and collectivity, breath and release. The result is a work that listens closely to the past while allowing it to speak with quiet authority in the present.
