If there is any band that symbolizes a certain French rock free of any Anglo-Saxon contingency, it is Magma. Created at the very beginning of 1969 by Christian Vander, drummer, percussionist and son-in-law of composer and jazz pianist Maurice Vander, Magma innovates and disturbs from his first record, this double LP simply entitled Magma or "Kobaïa", from the title of the first piece. Thanks to his father-in-law, Christian dated outstanding jazz musicians very early on. From the mid-1960s, he was immersed in soul music in vogue (Otis Redding in particular) and the free jazz of John Coltrane, his absolute hero, as well as "modern" composers such as Igor Stravinski and Bela Bartok or their "heirs" such as Frank Zappa. It also brings together the most adventurous musicians of the Parisian rock and jazz scene and combined with the use of an imaginary language, Kobai, gives birth to an unprecedented result, even for a time of upheaval. The music of the first Magma which follows an argument is certainly struck, full of gushes but it does not seek the break at any cost and here we find a soul coloring, thanks to the presence of brass, and many almost "shadokian" sound punctuations that counterbalance a reputation for imperturbable seriousness, accentuated it is true by the authoritarian singing of Klaus Blasque Iz More than five decades after its publication, this Magma retains all the appeal of surprise and innovation that its thinking master had elaborated. A monument, the first.
