Trumpeter and American singer. A personality among the greatest in jazz, of which he was a symbol throughout his career, A. trained in his native New Orleans. In 1918 he joined the "band" of Kid Ory, then, in 1919, he played on the Mississippi boats with Fate Marable and in 1922 he was called to Chicago by King Oliver, as second cornet of the Creole Jazz Band, with which he recorded the first records in 1923.
