Here we have a welcome reissue of Pithecanthropus Erectus by Charles Mingus - a bona fide jazz classic from 1956. The title track, which translates to 'upright ape man' tells the story of a man consumed by greed and power who suffers an inevitable downfall. The upright in the title also refers to Charles Mingus’ bass. Mingus taught the parts to the quartet he played with by ear rather than writing the music down.
