Elvis' debut LP, self-titled Elvis Presley, was the first rock 'n' roll album to reach number one on Billboard's national chart. Intriguingly, this first LP with mixed genres (rockabilly, blues, R&B, country, and pop), confused RCA on what to do with the singer, even though it had paid a king's ransom to buy his contract from Sam Phillips' of Sun Records. Despite the different genres though, the producers were consistent in keeping Presley's voice way out front in the musical mix. They may not have known Presley's exact musical direction, but they knew the value of his voice. It was RCA first million dollar-earning pop album!
