In terms of melody, ‘Femejism’ is a more outwardly pop-leaning record than their debut, but the duo are still as heavy as Black Sabbath when they want to be, as the serious riffs on ‘Bubble Baby’ and growls on ‘Grunge Bond’ attest. ‘Little Baby Beauty Queen’ sees them fly their stoner metal flag, but with a smattering of sequin-studded glam to liven up the deal. There’s even a semi-ballad in the shape of the bitter ‘Critic’, a hushed riposte to internet trolls hiding “behind your computerâ€Â. The trippy ‘Post Funk’ is something different entirely, sounding not unlike early Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which shouldn’t be too much of a surprise seeing as the New York garage-punk band’s own Nick Zinner helped out on production.
‘Femejism’ also plugs into real, raw emotion, with the searing ‘Turn It Off’ powered not just by Edwards’ brutal drumming, but by Troy’s lovelorn lyricism. A truly vital band.
