The music of Belbury Poly is, by turns joyous, naive and at times shot through with panic terror or supernatural wonder. like parallel world tv soundtracks or nostalgia for an imaginary past. The Willows is a deep dive into pastoral muzak that suggested Boards of Canada free from their distancing, pre-fab sonic decay - the thing that made them safe and cool in the first place. Chintzy synths spill into zither and melodica lines; recalibrated samples of hundred-year-old vocals are trapped like an evp reading of an old english cottage. A little night music.
