Anja Thauer was born in 1945 and is considered “the German Jacqueline du Pré.” Thauer’s 1968 recording of Dvo?ák’s Cello Concerto with Zden?k Mácal and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for Deutsche Grammophon stunned the musical world. “Thauer’s performance of the Dvo?ák Cello Concerto is of its time, and I don’t mean that it’s dated. It’s robust and full-blooded, constantly teetering on the edge of collapse. Only young musicians dare to play with that kind of near-reckless passion and Thauer was 23 when it was recorded – in Hamburg, in a studio that that The Beatles had used when they were in the city a few years previously.
